The Interview
What makes Oxbridge interviews different
Subject-specific
Engineers solve problems on a whiteboard. English candidates read an unseen poem. Every subject has its rhythm, so practise with someone who has sat in that exact chair.
Preparation pays off
The students who do best are not the cleverest in the room. They are the ones who have practised thinking out loud under pressure.
Beyond the application
Life at Oxford and Cambridge
i.
The collegiate system
Oxford has 39 colleges; Cambridge has 31. Your college is your home, your dining hall, your library, and the people who will teach you. Choosing one well matters, and it is less obvious than the league tables suggest.
ii.
Tutorials and supervisions
Most teaching happens in groups of two or three. You will hand in essays or problem sheets every week and defend them in front of a world expert. It is exhausting, exhilarating, and unlike anywhere else.
iii.
Eight-week terms
Terms are short and intense: eight weeks at Oxford, eight at Cambridge. The long vacations in between are when you read ahead, travel with purpose, and consolidate what you have learned, ready to go again.
iv.
More than studying
Rowing at dawn, formal halls, May Balls, the Union, hundreds of societies. The application is about academics; life there is about everything else too.
